There is no single price for a generator overhaul in Nigeria, and any page that gives you one is guessing. The same nameplate rating can carry a spread wide enough to wreck a budget line, because scope, the condition found at strip, parts specification and import timing each move the figure independently. A set needing a top end overhaul with the crankshaft left in place sits in a different commercial band from the same set with a scored crank, a cracked head and a seized turbocharger.

What we can set out plainly is what the number depends on, in the order those items move money, so you can build a realistic budget and interrogate any quotation put in front of you. The table below shows the span of each cost driver rather than a price, because the drivers are what a procurement officer can actually verify. A firm figure follows a plant assessment: inspection and measurement against OEM service limits, then a scope of work and bill of quantities you can price line by line.

Scope: The Four Tiers That Get Called an Overhaul

Overhaul is a loose word in this market, and it is the main reason two quotations for the same set can differ by a multiple rather than a margin. Before you compare prices, fix which tier you are actually buying and require every bidder to price that same tier. Most of the disputes we are called into on other people's jobs come down to a scope that was never written down.

  • Major service: oils, filters, coolant, belts and hoses, fuel system and injector service, valve clearance reset, battery and charging system check, protection and control verification, load bank test. No pressure parts removed.
  • Top end overhaul, in frame: heads removed, valves, guides and seats reworked or renewed, heads pressure tested and skimmed, liners and pistons assessed in place, rings and shell bearings renewed where the crankshaft measures within limits, turbocharger and injectors serviced or exchanged.
  • Full overhaul, out of frame: engine lifted and stripped to the bare block, crankshaft out for measurement, grinding or renewal, liners renewed, camshaft, gear train and oil pump assessed, deck and main bore alignment checked, full gasket and bearing set, alternator stripped with windings tested and bearings renewed.
  • Repower or replacement: exchange engine or new set, where measured wear, obsolete parts or fuel burn make a rebuild uneconomic once whole life cost is compared honestly.

Rating and engine class then scale everything inside whichever tier you selected. A 16 cylinder set carries four times the head, piston, liner and bearing count of a small standby unit, needs heavier lifting gear and a larger crew, and its alternator and control gear are separate work packages in their own right. Insist the scope is priced by work package rather than as a lump sum, so that a variation later is arithmetic instead of a negotiation.

Where the set sits inside a larger installation, the overhaul decision belongs with the wider maintenance plan rather than on its own. Condition at Strip, Site Access and Craneage

Condition is the one driver nobody can price honestly from the outside. Blowby and crankcase pressure, compression readings, oil analysis, exhaust temperature spread and a borescope survey will narrow the range, and we take all of them at assessment. But crankshaft journal ovality and taper, liner bore wear, head deck flatness and main bore alignment are measured with instruments on a stripped engine, and until that measurement exists a firm price is a guess wearing a letterhead.

Certain histories push condition reliably towards the expensive end, and they are worth flagging at enquiry stage because they change the shape of the quotation. Run to failure operation spreads damage from one component into the block. Coolant loss and overheating warp heads and glaze liners. Prolonged light load running on a diesel set brings wet stacking, bore glazing and a carboned turbocharger and valve train. Adulterated fuel takes out injectors and pumps together, and flood or water ingress turns a mechanical job into a rewind and a full electrical strip.

Access is the driver that surprises procurement most often. A set in a basement or rooftop plant room, a containerised unit in a tight yard, a doorway narrower than the engine or a site with no crane hardstand all convert a routine lift into a rigging exercise with permits, road closure and possibly night working attached. On constrained sites in Lagos and Port Harcourt the rigging line can approach the mechanical labour line, which is why we survey access before pricing rather than after.

That survey also settles whether the work is done in situ or the unit comes to a workshop. Workshop rebuild gives better cleanliness control, proper measurement and a testable result, but adds rigging, transport, reinstatement and standby cover for the transit period. In situ work saves that logistics cost and is often right for a large set, provided the plant room can be sealed, lit and kept clean enough to open an engine in.

Outage Window, Spares Lead Times and FX Exposure

The outage window sets the price of the same labour twice over. Planned work, with spares landed and staged before the crew mobilises, is executed on day rates in normal hours. Emergency work buys the identical scope with shift working, weekend rates, air freight in place of sea freight and hired standby capacity while the set is down. The comparison worth making is not overhaul cost against overhaul cost, but the premium for emergency execution against your own cost of unplanned downtime per hour.

Spares are the item most likely to move your programme, and therefore your cost. Consumables and common filtration are generally available in country. Overhaul kits, liners and piston sets, crankshafts and crank kits, turbocharger cartridges, AVRs, exciter and rotating diode assemblies and control cards are imported. Plan on roughly 6 to 16 weeks for imported kits once factory lead time, Form M and PAAR processing, shipping and clearance at Apapa, Tin Can or Onne are counted, and longer again on older or obsolete engine families where parts are built to order.

Currency exposure then sits on top of the whole parts scope. Labour, consumables, transport and site facilities are incurred in NGN, while the imported content is priced against the rate on the day the order is placed rather than the day of enquiry, which is why serious quotations for imported items carry a validity measured in days rather than months. We recommend three controls: split the quotation so local NGN scope and FX exposed imported scope are visible as separate totals, agree the reference rate and its source in the contract, and release the long lead parts order against confirmed scope as early as the assessment allows.

Parts specification is the last variable, and the one most often used to make a number look better than it is. OEM genuine, OEM equivalent from a named manufacturer, and reconditioned exchange units are three different commercial propositions with three different service lives. Any of them can be the right answer for a given machine and duty, but the specification has to be fixed and stated on every bid before the prices mean anything.

How a Firm Number Is Built: Assessment, Scope and Bill of Quantities

We do not issue a price against a phone description of a fault, because a number produced that way is either padded for the worst case or destined to arrive back as variations. The route to a defensible figure starts with a plant assessment. We capture nameplate and control data, hours run, service and fault history and the actual load profile, then take instrument readings: oil analysis, blowby and crankcase pressure, compression, exhaust temperature spread, insulation resistance and winding tests on the alternator, and a borescope survey where access allows.

Where the assessment points to top end or full overhaul, the strip is carried out under an agreed inspection scope so measurement replaces assumption. You then receive an inspection report giving measured values against OEM service limits, a scope of work split into confirmed and contingent items, a bill of quantities listing parts by part number and origin, a programme with spares delivery shown on the critical path, and a pre agreed rate for work found at strip. That is the document set a purchase order can actually be raised against.

When you compare bids, normalise them before you read the totals. Confirm every bidder priced the same tier of work, the same parts specification, the same test regime including load bank verification, the same handover records and the same warranty terms. A lower figure that quietly omits alternator work, leaves the parts origin unstated or drops load testing is not a lower figure, it is a smaller scope.

Imported content is different: it is priced against the rate on the day the order is placed, so that portion carries a validity measured in days rather than months. We split the quotation so you can see the FX exposed portion as a separate total, we state the reference rate and its source, and we recommend releasing long lead parts against confirmed scope early rather than holding the order while the rate moves. That way the exposure is visible and managed instead of appearing later as a variation.
