Axiom Power Services provides rotating equipment services in Nigeria for plants that cannot absorb unplanned stoppages. We work on centrifugal and reciprocating compressors, single and multistage pumps, fans, blowers, gearboxes and their drive trains, from routine condition monitoring through to full strip, inspect and rebuild. Our engineers are based in Lagos and mobilise to sites in Rivers, FCT, Kaduna, Delta and Kano States.

The work is diagnostic before it is mechanical. We take vibration spectra, phase readings, alignment measurements and process data first, then tell you which machines on your list actually need to be opened during the outage. That keeps the outage window short and keeps spend on the assets that are genuinely degrading rather than on the whole population. Where a critical spare is obsolete or the import lead time is unacceptable, we reverse engineer the part and manufacture it locally.

Centrifugal and Reciprocating Compressors

Air, nitrogen and process gas machines: valve and unloader work, piston, ring and rod replacement, cylinder honing, impeller and diaphragm inspection and full running clearance checks. We record as found and as left clearances against OEM limits so your asset file carries a real baseline.

Industrial Pumps

Overhung, between bearings and vertical turbine pumps on boiler feed, fuel transfer, water treatment and process duty. We address seal leakage, cavitation damage, wear ring clearance loss and shaft deflection instead of swapping the pump and repeating the failure.

Fans, Blowers and Air Handling

ID and FD fans, roots blowers and cooling tower fans, including in situ balancing of rotors that cannot be sent off site. Blade erosion, fouling and bearing housing looseness are the failure modes we see most often on Nigerian plants.

Vibration Analysis and Condition Monitoring

Route based data collection with spectrum, time waveform and phase analysis to separate unbalance, misalignment, looseness, bearing defects and blade pass problems. Findings are reported against ISO 20816 severity zones with a recommended action date, not a vague warning.

Laser Alignment and Dynamic Balancing

Laser shaft alignment of motor, gearbox and driven machine trains, with soft foot corrected and thermal growth targets applied before final readings. Field balancing of fans and rotors to ISO 21940 grades using a portable analyser, with residual unbalance recorded.

Rotating Equipment We Service and the Failure Modes We Chase

Our rotating equipment services in Nigeria cover the machine classes that carry production: reciprocating and centrifugal compressors, boiler feed and transfer pumps, ID and FD fans, blowers, gearboxes and the motors or turbines that drive them. Each class fails in a recognisable way, so we set the inspection interval against the failure mode rather than against the calendar.

  • Reciprocating compressors: valve failure, ring and rider band wear, rod runout and packing leakage. Valve inspection every 4,000 running hours, top end overhaul around 8,000 hours, major overhaul between 24,000 and 32,000 hours.
  • Centrifugal compressors: fouling, seal gas problems, rotor rub and surge damage. Monthly condition monitoring, major overhaul typically every 3 to 5 years or 25,000 to 40,000 running hours.
  • Pumps: mechanical seal failure, wear ring clearance loss, cavitation erosion and bearing distress. Seal and bearing life of 18 to 36 months on clean duty, considerably less on abrasive or intermittent service.
  • Fans and blowers: blade erosion and fouling that drives unbalance, bearing housing looseness and belt drive wear. Quarterly vibration checks, with balancing once velocity crosses the alarm zone.
  • Drive trains and couplings: misalignment, coupling element fatigue and soft foot. Alignment verified after every rebuild and after any foundation, piping or baseplate work.

Vibration Analysis, Laser Alignment and Dynamic Balancing

Diagnosis comes before disassembly. We collect vibration spectra, time waveform and phase at each bearing position under normal load, together with process readings such as suction and discharge pressure, flow, bearing temperature and motor current. That combined data set shows whether you have a mechanical defect, a process problem or a foundation problem, which are three different purchase orders.

Vibration severity is reported against ISO 20816 zones so the numbers mean the same thing to your team and ours. For most medium sized machines on rigid foundations we treat 2.8 mm/s rms as the point where a machine leaves good condition and 7.1 mm/s rms as the point where continued running threatens bearings and seals. Rolling element bearing defects appear in the envelope and high frequency bands well before overall velocity moves, and that early warning is what gives you time to order parts and plan the outage.

Alignment and balancing close out the job. We align shaft trains with a laser system to a residual offset target of 0.05 mm, correct soft foot first, and apply thermal growth offsets where the machine runs hot. Rotors are balanced in place to ISO 21940 grade G2.5 for general industrial duty, or G6.3 where the application and speed allow it.

Overhaul Scope: Seals, Couplings, Bearings and Control Panels

A rebuild is only as good as the clearances and the parts that go back in. Our standard scope covers strip and clean, dimensional inspection of shafts, journals, wear rings and housings against OEM limits, and non destructive testing where cracking is a credible risk. We then replace bearings, mechanical seals, gaskets, packing and coupling elements, reassemble with recorded clearances and document the run in at rated load.

Every overhaul returns a document pack you can file against the asset and hand to the next crew:

  • As found condition report with vibration, alignment and process data
  • Dimensional inspection sheet showing measured values against allowable clearances
  • Parts list with items replaced, part numbers and material specification
  • As left vibration and alignment readings taken at rated load
  • Recommended next inspection interval and the wear items to hold in stores

Control and protection usually lag the mechanical work. We upgrade compressor and pump control panels, replace obsolete relays, contactors and starters, add vibration and temperature protection channels, and bring trip settings back in line with the machine's actual operating envelope. Where several machines share a panel or a common utility header, a power plant audit is the sensible starting point.

Reverse Engineering, Local Spares and How the Work Is Priced

Import lead times and FX movement cost Nigerian plants more than the mechanical failures themselves. An impeller, shaft, sleeve or wear ring ordered from an OEM can take 10 to 20 weeks door to door before clearing, and the naira cost is fixed on the day of payment rather than the day of quotation. For obsolete machines the part may not be available at any price.

We capture the failed component dimensionally, verify material by hardness and composition checks, then manufacture the replacement locally in 3 to 6 weeks for most items. Impellers, shafts, sleeves, casing wear rings, gland followers and coupling spacers are routine work. Where the original design contributed to the failure, we say so and propose a material or clearance change instead of reproducing the fault.

For procurement, every proposal carries a fixed scope of work, a priced bill of materials, mobilisation and manpower separated from parts, the outage window in days and a clear list of exclusions. That is enough detail to raise a purchase order without a second round of clarifications. Frequently Asked Questions

How often should rotating equipment be checked with vibration analysis?

For critical machines we recommend a monthly route, and quarterly as the minimum for balance of plant equipment. Reciprocating compressors still need valve inspection every 4,000 running hours regardless of what the vibration trend shows. A plant with 40 to 60 monitored points is normally covered in one to two days per visit, with the report issued within five working days.

What does a rotating equipment survey cost in Nigeria?

A baseline vibration and alignment survey runs from about NGN 900,000 (roughly USD 600) for a small plant with 20 to 30 measurement points, up to NGN 2,800,000 (roughly USD 1,850) for a large site with 100 points and full reporting. Compressor and pump overhauls are quoted separately once the survey has defined the scope, so you are not paying for parts nobody has proved you need. Mobilisation outside Lagos is priced per trip and shown as a separate line.

Can you manufacture spares for obsolete compressors and pumps?

Yes. We reverse engineer impellers, shafts, sleeves, wear rings, coupling components and gland parts from the failed item or from a drawing, with material verified before machining begins. Typical delivery is 3 to 6 weeks against 10 to 20 weeks for an imported OEM part. Pricing is settled in naira, so FX movement during the lead time does not reopen the cost.

How long does a compressor or pump overhaul take?

A site pump overhaul is usually 2 to 4 days once parts are on the ground. A reciprocating compressor top end overhaul takes 4 to 7 days, while a major overhaul involving crankshaft and frame work runs 2 to 4 weeks. Centrifugal compressor majors are planned around your shutdown window and normally need 3 to 6 weeks including rotor work and balancing.

Yes. We mobilise from Lagos to Rivers, FCT, Kaduna, Delta and Kano States, with planned work typically starting within 5 to 10 working days of a purchase order.
